Manuel Tavares was born in Porto/Portugal. He started his musical studies in the Professional School of Music of Porto where he studied guitar with Christopher Lyall, Paula Marques and Augusto Pacheco.

In 1996 he initiated the superior course of Education of Music in the University of Aveiro, in the specific area of guitar, under the orientation of Paulo Vaz de Carvalho. His degree went through the orientation of Jozef Zsapka, with whom he studied two years more. He participated in various master classes. He conjugated the study of guitar with the activity of professor in "Academia de Música de Paredes", "Conservatório de Viseu" and "Academia de Música de Vale Cambra".

Currently he's doing his masters degree in Chamber Music in the University of Aveiro, oriented
by Prof. Fausto Neves and the Brazilian guitarist Odair Assad (member of the famous duo Assad).

He teaches in the Conservatory "Calouste Gulbenkian" in Braga and in "Academia de Música de Paredes". He also plays lute in renascence music groups
